I was a fan of David Bowie – the subject of this month’s cover story, starting page 38 – as far back as “London Boys”, which I remember hearing on Radio Luxembourg in 1967, more than 40 years of listening to him, often in wonder, to follow. It’s an uncommon thrill to finally meet him when I interview him for a Melody Maker cover story not long after “Heroes” comes out, an occasion that makes me understand what it is like to be swept off your feet. I felt, somehow, wooed.

I had great fun also, this issue, compiling the accompanying Rebel Rebel CD, although I should quietly point out that what you might call a last minute production ‘hiccup’ resulted in the transposition of the tracks by Last Town Chorus and King Crimson, their appearance on the CD now not matching the track listing on the sleeve.
