LCD Soundsystemโ€˜s James Murphy has reflected on his experience collaborating with the late David Bowie on his final album Blackstar, revealing that it โ€œbroke his heartโ€ that he wasnโ€™t able to fully integrate himself into Bowieโ€™s set-up.

Murphy contributed percussion to Bowieโ€™s final studio album, which was released in January 2016, two days before Bowieโ€™s death.

Speaking on the latest episode of the podcast WTF with Marc Maron, Murphy recalled his first encounters with Bowie which led to him being invited to work on Blackstar.

โ€œI made a mix for Bowie, a remix of a song from โ€˜The Next Dayโ€™. It went really great and everybody was really happy, apparently he was quite happy,โ€ Murphy told Maron. โ€œHe also came in to record on the Arcade Fire album [Reflektor] I was helping make. We met then, became friendly and exchanged emails.

โ€œI remember being on a trip once and writing him an email, being like: โ€˜Hey, Iโ€™m away right now. But one of these days itโ€™d be great to get together and Iโ€™d love to make some music with you.โ€™ This is a big thing for me: Iโ€™m like the guy asking someone on a date for the first time, working up the courage. He writes back: โ€˜Funny you should say that, please come and see me when youโ€™re back and weโ€™ll talk.โ€™ Iโ€™m doing backflips and losing my mind, Iโ€™m like: โ€˜Iโ€™m gonna make a record with David Bowie!'โ€

Murphy said that he then hoped that he and Bowie would be able to work on a project together, but found that the late artist was already working on demos for Blackstar.

โ€œHeโ€™s like: โ€˜You feel like you can add something?โ€™ And Iโ€™m like: โ€˜I definitely feel like I can add something.โ€™ So the time comes, Iโ€™ve signed all the NDAs โ€“ this is for Blackstar โ€“ and I go to work. I come in, meet all the players in the band: love โ€™em, theyโ€™re so nice, thereโ€™s a really great rapport.

โ€œWhen I walk in, I see David sitting in his chair and the rest of the band are in the other room playing,โ€ Murphy recalled, before becoming unsure of his place in the studio and comparing it to โ€œwalking into a cockpit and all the chairs are fullโ€.

โ€œI didnโ€™t know what I was supposed to do. I was struggling to find my way into this already-moving machineโ€ฆ Iโ€™m like: โ€˜Oh, excuse me while I insert myselfโ€ฆ Oh hey guys, have you considered hearing what this fucking guy thinks? Maybe youโ€™ve heard my songs?โ€™

โ€œIt started dawning on me that maybe what my job was was to be the disturber of the process,โ€ he continued. โ€œThe remix I did was so disturbing: it was take this thing and turn it upside down, reverse it and put it out this way โ€“ but thatโ€™s not what I do with people. I didnโ€™t know [Bowie] at all, but he definitely seems to have a kind of confidence that they werenโ€™t handing out when I was born in 1970.โ€

Murphy said that while he was โ€œhaving a good timeโ€ working on Blackstar, he eventually told Bowie: โ€œโ€˜Look man, I think I need to take these things to my studio and work on these things myself โ€“ thatโ€™s the instrument I playโ€™.

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t a good fit and it broke my heart,โ€ he added. โ€œI had to leave: I kind of talked myself out of a job. I donโ€™t have that gene, man.โ€

Last week LCD Soundsystem announced a 10th anniversary reissue of The Long Goodbye: LCD Soundsystem Live At Madison Square Garden.
