The Jam Reunite… Sort Of

0

In an unlikely move, The Jam – well, two thirds of them – have announced they will tour for the first time in 25 years. Bassist Bruce Foxton and drummer Rick Buckler have reformed the band for a 20-date UK tour, which starts on May 2 in the intimate Oxford Zodiac venue. “Fans have been demanding that we play live for years,” said Buckler. “The songs mean so much to so many people.” Foxton and Buckler have been writing new Jam material and plan to release a new studio album in the autumn. And even though original frontman Paul Weller will take no part in the shows, Foxton and Buckler are offering an olive branch. "Paul is always welcome to join us for the reunion, but until then, we've got a tour and a new album to do!" Foxton said. The 20 live shows will be a mix of old and new. “We've decided to perform The Jam's greatest hits – ‘Going Underground’, ‘Down in the Tube Station at Midnight’, ‘The Eton Rifles’, ‘Town Called Malice’ plus some of my own songs,” confirmed Foxton. Bruce and Rick's reunion also coincides with the band's 30th anniversary and release of their debut album In The City, originally released in April 1977. We won’t be holding our breaths for the trio to reunite proper, it is alleged that Weller has not spoken to Buckler in over 20 years – since the the split in ’82 when Weller dissolved The Jam to form The Style Council. Crosby And Nash US Shows On Hold

0

David Crosby and Graham Nash have postponed their forthcoming US tour due to Crosby's ill health, Reuters reports. No specific illness has been stated. A message posted by the band's manager Donald Miller on http://crosbynash.com on Friday said: "The action was taken because of medical issues that have arisen for member David Crosby." He added that they "deeply regret that the band will not be able to embark on this (U.S.) tour as scheduled. At this time, we thank you for your understanding and the band looks forward to seeing you this fall." Crosby and Nash's tour was due to start on March 19 in Shawnee, Oklahoma, finishing on April 15 in Niagara Falls, New York. Earlier this year, Crosby and Nash were due to pereform concerts in Australia, but they too were cancelled due to Crosby taking ill. The postponement was reported in an Australian newspaper which claimed that Crosby had contracted pneumonia. Long-term musical partner Stephen Stills was due to rejoin them on stage for those dates. Crosby, now 65, has had a history of substance abuse, including contracting hepatitis C and having a liver transplant in 1995. The US dates will be re-scheduled in the coming months and are expected to take place in the Autumn.

The Hold Steady take London by storm

0

You’ll have to excuse me if I sound as hoarse as a hacksaw this morning and seem more than a little rough around the edges, but I am in slow recovery from an extraordinary night in the company of The Hold Steady, who for today at least are officially the best rock’n’roll band on the planet. If you were anywhere in the east of London last night and were maybe aware of some celestial commotion in the sky above Hoxton Square, some supernatural luminosity you couldn’t put a name to, I’d like to think it was the probably unearthly glow generated by what was going on in the back room of the Hoxton Bar & Kitchen, where The Hold Steady were going about what they do better than almost anyone else I’ve ever seen. A couple of weeks ago, I went to see The Arcade Fire, a fan of Funeral fully expecting to be overwhelmed from what I’d heard about them live from people whose opinion I am usually inclined to trust without question. It was an evening that descended faster than I’d imagined possible into sullen disappointment, although I am sure they will have better nights. As regular Uncut readers will be more than passingly aware, I have recently been mightily smitten by The Hold Steady’s Boys And Girls In America – in actuality the third album from the Brooklyn-based, Minneapolis-reared quartet, but possibly the first thing by them most of us here will have heard. I was fretful beforehand, worried that once again my expectations may have got out of hand, but buoyed somewhat by reports from the band’s Manchester gig in Thursday’s editions of The Independent and Guardian that suggested that every stateside superlative I’d lapped up about The Hold Steady’s live shows was absolutely on the money, neither hot air or merely baloney. In the event, they were just sensational. Visually, they are no one’s idea of pin ups, rather resembling a police line-up. But they have an undeniably raffish charm, best represented by debonair keyboardist Franz Nicolay, and in singer and genius songwriter Craig Finn, who looks like a tousled cross between Elvis Costello and a severely crumpled Randy Newman, they have a frontman who brings a Pentecostal rapture to everything they play. For the entire gig, he wears the beaming smile of someone for whom every moment he’s on stage is a kind of salvation. Like The Drive-By Truckers, you suspect that for The Hold Steady what they do is less a career than a vocation, the answer to a calling. On Boys And Girls In America, you can hear loud and vivid echoes of the rowdy turmoil of Springsteen’s E-Street Band in their impassioned prime. What I hear more often tonight, however, as the Hold Steady blast ferociously through their incredible songbook, is the searing white hot brilliance of Costello and The Attractions in the days when they were still playing rooms this size and thrillingly essaying the material that would eventually light up This Year’s Model. It’s a big bold sound, full and furious, relentlessly dynamic, a spinning kineticism that is never top-heavy, or overburdened with unnecessary frills or discursive solos. Everything’s to the point, honed to a lethal sharpness and played with a homicidal momentum that means the entire set goes by in a flash, with more on-stage drinking than I’ve seen since The Replacements played the old Mean Fiddler in Harlseden. These are clearly people for whom being in a band is the best thing in the world, every night you’d like to think one hell of a party. Anyway, before you know it, they’ve gone from the stunning “Stuck Between Stations” to the ecstatic set-closer “Southtown Girls”, and Craig Finn is barging past me through the fire exit, the band following him at close quarters and the fire doors clanging shut behind them. The audience of course is howling for more and there’s a distinctly Tap-like moment when I realise the banging I can hear is the band trying to get back into the teeming room they’ve only just vacated and I have to open the fire doors for them to get back in. What follows is even more of a rushing blur and ends with a mass stage invasion, more people up there it seems with the band by the end than there are in the crowd that’s watching them. I later meet up with Craig who’s every bit the chap you hoped he’d be and more. We are soon in rapt conversation about The Replacements, for whom we share a mutual passion, our excited chatter interrupted at one pint by the chief music critic of The Observer, who first of all shakes Craig’s hand, then drops to her knees and kisses her feet, much to Craig’s frank astonishment. It all starts to unravel following that, and gets especially blurred after someone presents Craig with a bottle of champagne, which he pours into a couple of pint glasses and we end up toasting Paul Westerberg before downing the bubbly and getting back into the beer, the room beginning to tilt somewhat on its axis at this point and the sky outside still aflame with the light I mentioned earlier when I stumble into Hoxton Square, my ears still ringing and my head aswirl. A brilliant night, even if I am suffering for it today.

You’ll have to excuse me if I sound as hoarse as a hacksaw this morning and seem more than a little rough around the edges, but I am in slow recovery from an extraordinary night in the company of The Hold Steady, who for today at least are officially the best rock’n’roll band on the planet.

Cate Blanchett Speaks About Playing An Electric Bob Dylan

0

Actress Cate Blanchett has revealed what it is like to portray a destructing Bob Dylan in the forthcoming Todd Haynes film about the singer. Haynes has broken up the film, "I'm Not There: Suppositions On A Film Concerning Bob Dylan," into seven parts, with seven actors playing different versions of Dylan. Cate Blanchett is the only female taking on the challenge of playing the singer. Talking to UK newspaper The Metro, Blanchett says that it was easy for her to play a male character. She said: "I always dressed as a man when I was at school. I loved wearing a tie and shirt and I was always wearing suits." Talking about the new film, Blanchett tells us what some of the other 'Dylans' are going to be portrayed like. She says: "Todd has divided Dylan's musical journey into six personas and ascribed a character to each. Christian Bale plays an evangelical preacher. Heath Ledger plays him as an actor. I play a rock star going electric and self-combusting in front of the media." Blanchett adds with humour that she's unsure if she wants to meet the iconic musician. She says: "The best way to get to know people is by having sex with them or working with them - and neither of those things is on the cards with me and Dylan, so it's probably best that I don't." Hollywood A-listers Richard Gere, Julianne Moore and Adrien Brody also star in the film produced by Bob and Harvey Weinstein. It is expected to be released in the US by the end of the year.

Revealed ! The terrible necessity of Tin Machine

Hard to know what to play this morning. My ears are still ringing from a massive night in the company of The Hold Steady, who played an astonishing gig in a Hoxton bar. As I left, Allan was deep in conversation with their singer, Craig Finn. I'm sure he'll be writing something on his blog about it later. In the meantime, I've found a new David Bowie comp called "The Best Of Bowie 1980/1987" in this morning's post and, perhaps out of wilful perversity, I'm playing it now. It starts OK, frontloaded with the good stuff (from "Scary Monsters") and the commercial stuff (from "Let's Dance") - not much scope for searing critical re-evaluation here. But where this curious comp gets interesting is in the second half. It's the story, effectively, of why Bowie decided to form Tin Machine. Because, rotten as Tin Machine were, at least they had a focus, a point of sorts. This, though, is a portrait of a bored dilettante. Bowie's always been a magpie, but his genius is to invest other people's ideas with a rare charisma and and an infectious enthusiasm. Here, he wanders from one track to another with a sort of disconsolate pragmatism. And, amidst the will-this-do takes from Tonight and Never Let Me Down (albums even he dislikes), Bowie's authentic mid-period voice emerges on a slew of soundtrack commissions like "When The Wind Blows" and "This Is Not America": strikingly mournful, weary of his own skin, sounding far older than he does now. This is not particularly good music by any standards, let alone those of Bowie, but it is weirdly compelling. He only really sounds remotely engaged on an austere Brecht tune ("Drowned Girl") and the ludicrous synth-gospel of "Underground" (from, lest we forget, the soundtrack to "Labyrinth"). Clearly, when you're playing the Goblin King, the logic of knocking out Pixies covers with some guys in suits suddenly becomes very, very appealing.
