U2 – the early years: “There was a presence, a magnetism…”

U2’s shock-released new album, Songs Of Innocence, is largely themed around the band’s childhoods and adolescence in Dublin, according to Bono. Well, here’s what came next… This is the full story, as told by those who were there, of U2’s rise from indie hopefuls to becoming the Biggest Rock Band On The Planet. Written by Stephen Dalton, and originally published in Uncut’s December 1999 issue (Take 31).

The Felice Brothers: “We’ve got bad reputations…”

As The Felice Brothers tour the UK and perform at End Of The Road festival this weekend, it seems a good time to battle through the Uncut archives and see how the group were doing back in August 2009 (Take 147). Marc Spitz heads out to upstate New York to see how these self-mythologising drifters created a glorious new take on roots rock from the comfort of a chicken coop. Just don’t, whatever you do, mention Bob Dylan and The Band...

Hear new Paul Weller track, “Brand New Toy”

Paul Weller has announced he will release a new single for Record Store Day. You can hear the track, "Brand New Toy", below. Weller has also revealed details of a new compilation album More Modern Classics, featuring tracks from the past 15 years of the singer's solo career. The album will be released on June 2 and acts as the follow up to 1998 compilation Modern Classics.

Reviewed: Hurray For The Riff Raff’s “Small Town Heroes”

To be a fan of Gillian Welch, as many Uncut readers will appreciate, requires an uncommon degree of faithfulness and patience. In 18 years, she has released just five albums; given that the gap between the last one (2011’s The Harrow And The Harvest) and its predecessor (2003’s Soul Journey) ran to eight years, a follow-up may still be some way off.

“Drank too much, did too many drugs”: an interview with George Clooney

George Clooney's latest film as both actor and director, The Monuments Men, opens in the UK later this week, so it seemed an appropriate moment to dig out this interview I conducted for the late Uncut DVD in New York with Clooney around the release of 2005's Good Night, And Good Luck and Syriana.
