Christopher Nolan was never going to find it easy to follow a film as wholly individual as Memento and Insomnia initially seemed a somewhat disappointing foray into the conventional mainstream, slick, professional, but rather empty?much like Panic Room, David Fincher’s follow-up to the blistering genius of Fight Club.

Watching it again, however, Insomnia is a quiet revelation, a compelling meditation on guilt and obsession, the price driven men pay for what passes as their souls when certain lines are crossed. Al Pacino is, no surprise, tremendous as the veteran cop investigating the murder of a teenage girl in nightless Alaska even as his own career as a legendary investigator is under critical review. Robin Williams, meanwhile, is creepily effective as one of the suspects in the killing and his scenes with Pacino are grippingly intense. Nolan probably concedes too much to the multiplex?the final showdown is a hollow sop to the box office?but at its lingering best, Insomnia is insidiously brilliant.

Many, in 1976, decried Sidney Lumet’s satire of the media, from Paddy Chayefsky’s script, as overcooked, preachy and ludicrous. Now, it seems visionary and perhaps even understated. News commentator Howard Beale (Peter Finch) begins to ripple the television airwaves by?radically?saying what he really thinks, and threatening suicide. His bosses and their sponsors are horrified, until they realise he’s becoming something of a messiah figure to viewers, and ratings are rocketing. William Holden tells a heartless Faye Dunaway, “You’re television incarnate?indifferent to suffering, insensitive to joy.”

It won four Oscars (from nine nominations) and spawned a host of spin-offs and copycats, most of which stalled. But in recent years its influence and prescience have been explicit. It’s a mad-as-hell world.

Nick Broomfield’s documentaries are as much farcical as investigative, with the director affecting the role of bumbling, plummy-voiced faux-naif, Kurt & Courtney (1998) was no exception. He looks hilariously out of place trailing around grungey Seattle, politely interrogating a series of eccentrics, conspiracy theorists and whacked-out dopers. He examines the possibility that Courtney murdered her husband, but witnesses prove so unreliable he drops the charge. However, the censorious, evasive Love still emerges as the Wicked Witch and, as always, Broomfield’s blundering approach masks a persistence which yields triumphant results. Most touching are tapes of a seven-year-old Kurt squealing along to The Monkees, innocence and exuberance still unspoiled.

The clinically style-obsessed Tony Scott might not have been everybody’s choice to helm a Tarantino script just as St Quentin was white-hot (seems a while ago now, huh?), but he made a splendid 1993 pulpy pot-boiler which, in sum, outshines its pithy but disjointed parts. Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette are the doomed Detroit lovers-on-the-run with a suitcase of coke, negotiating baroque badlands after Slater kills sleazoid pimp Gary Oldman and his comedy dreadlocks. Everyone who’s anyone turns up to harass the couple and their sad dad Dennis Hopper. Christopher Walken’s in his element as their ruthless pursuer; Brad Pitt’s a chuckle as a fazed Beavis. The violence may look dated and gratuitous now, but there’s enough savage screwball farce to keep you grinning malevolently.
