The Waterboys: “Fisherman’s Box”

In the next edition of Uncut, out on September 25 in the UK, Alastair McKay recounts a recent trip to Mike Scott’s flat in Dublin. McKay is there to interview Scott for a piece on the making of The Waterboys’ “Fisherman’s Blues”, a wonderful album which, imminently, will be memorialised by a 7CD compilation of its epic sessions, “Fisherman’s Box”.

The Clash, Fleetwood Mac, Bill Callahan, Mazzy Star, Arctic Monkeys in the new Uncut; plus the music and film of the 2000s

I hope you had a good Bank Holiday break. I spent a very enjoyable chunk of it reading the new Carl Hiaasen novel – excuse the shameless self-promotion, but you can read an interview I did with Hiaasen over on my blog. But now we’re back in the office, and it’s my pleasure to introduce you all to the new issue of Uncut, which goes on sale tomorrow.

‘The Rolling Stones played the loudest ever Hyde Park gig and only had one complaint,’ say promoters

The Rolling Stones apparently played the loudest gig ever to take place in London's Hyde Park, according to Jim King of concert promoters AEG. King added that despite this, only one complaint about the noise was recorded. Speaking to Music Week, King commented: "The Rolling Stones played the loudest anybody's ever played in Hyde Park before and we had one complaint. The music could have been off and we'd have still had that complaint anyway."

Godrich posted a number of messages on Twitter concerning the removal of Atoms For Peace's album Amok from Spotify, explaining that he believes the system is run by the "same old industry bods trying to get a stranglehold".

“When it came out people were like, ‘Where in the world did this come from? What kind of music is this?’” Robbie Robertson tells Uncut in an exclusive interview for this month’s cover story celebrating the 45th anniversary of The Band’s landmark debut album, Music From Big Pink.

Elvis Costello at Glastonbury 2013 – review

What with the sun blazing dangerously down on Worthy Farm, everyone seems to be in a blissful mood at Glastonbury this afternoon. Extraneous, and in some cases, all clothing layers have been shed, and the Southwest's supply of UV facepaints has been decimated.

The Great Gatsby

The cover story of this month’s Vanity Fair paints a disturbing picture of a major Hollywood movie going off the rails. Over-budget and with its release date delayed, the film is further troubled by a lack of creative vision and no clear sense of how to deliver a concluding third act. These are production problems that you might assume would beset a mainstream blockbuster – the film in the Vanity Fair story is Brad Pitt’s zombie epic World War Z, by the way.
