Reviewed: The Waterboys play “Fisherman’s Blues”, London Hammersmith Apollo, December 18, 2013

So this, I think, might be a new thing: not so much a live recreation of a classic album, but a live recreation of the sessions which resulted in a classic album. A show predicated not just on evocative songs recorded 25-odd years ago, but on a nostalgia for outtakes that – up until a month or so ago, at least – most of the crowd in the Hammersmith Apollo tonight had never even heard.

Morrissey: “Unfortunately, I am not homosexual”

Morrissey has issued a statement intended to clarify his sexuality, after opening up in Autobiography about his relationship with a man. The statement, which appeared on the quasi-official site, True To You, says: "Unfortunately, I am not homosexual. In technical fact, I am humasexual. I am attracted to humans. But, of course ... not many". -MORRISSEY, Sweden, 19 October 2013."

Trans: The return of Bernard Butler and Jackie McKeown

A few weeks ago, an EP turned up from the Rough Trade label, credited to a band called Trans (I’ve included some tracks below). Information was sketchy, at best: among the gnomic statements of intent on the press release, the most concrete were probably “Hard-panned stereo”, “Glasgow left/London right”, “celebrate good times” and, most pointedly, “MESSAGE: OBLIQUE”.

Roy Harper: “I was an absolute rebel… I once painted the local town hall with swastikas and hammers and sickles”

Roy Harper has recently returned with a raved-about new album, Man & Myth, and a UK tour, including a date at London’s prestigious Royal Festival Hall on October 22 – he’s arguably bigger than he has been since the mid-‘70s. Celebrating Harper’s 70th birthday back in July 2011 (Take 170), Uncut speaks to Roy about tales of escapes from psychiatric hospitals, tempestuous dealings with the music business, and the sinister connection between Tony Blair and Cliff… Words: Allan Jones
