The first time Melody Maker feels confident enough to send me abroad without fearing an international incident as a consequence, I'm dispatched to interview Frank Zappa in Paris, where The Mothers Of Invention are celebrating their 10th anniversary.
Bill Doss of Olivia Tremor Control has died at the age of 43.
A singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, he was also a co-founder of the Elephant 6 collective, and played with the Sunshine Fix and Apples in Stereo, as well as being part of cult indie rock group, Olivia Tremor Control.
The band announced the news on their website – via Rolling Stone - writing: "We are devastated by the loss of our brother Bill Doss… We are at a loss for words." A cause of death has not yet been announced.
Been talking for a while now about how I think Six Organs Of Admittance’s “Ascent” is one of the best albums of 2012, and I’ve finally written about it at length in the new issue of Uncut. I had lunch with Harvey Weinstein once. This was during the Cannes Film Festival, and I was among a group of film journalists invited to one of the swelegant hotels on the Croisette to nibble canapés and listen dutifully while Weinstein unveiled the forthcoming slate for his company, Miramax.
