A new office this week, although a good few crates remain. These, though, are the tunes that’ve sensitively assisted our transition. Special props to Bob Carpenter’s rediscovered album from ’74, very much kin to “No Other”; to the Mauritanian desert rock of Noura Mint Seymali; to the reissue of an old Imaginary Softwoods ambient set from John Elliott, ex of Emeralds; and to the enduring usefulness of Pye Corner Audio and Girma Yifrashewa.
Bruce Springsteen will induct the E Street Band into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, it has been confirmed.
The ceremony, which will take place at Brooklyn's Barclays Center on April 10, will also see Michael Stripe induct Nirvana and Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello induct Kiss, Rolling Stone reports.
The War On Drugs’ new album, Lost In The Dream, is out on Monday (March 17). Here, in this feature from Uncut’s November 2011 issue (Take 174), Sam Richards joins Adam Granduciel’s friend and collaborator Kurt Vile on tour in California to uncover the blood ties between Vile’s Violators and The War On Drugs…
Graham Parker reveals his admiration for Amy Winehouse in the new issue of Uncut (dated November 2013), out now.
Explaining that the singer’s 2006 album Back To Black made the biggest impression on him since hearing The Wailer’s Catch A Fire in the ’70s, Parker says he cried when Winehouse died.
“It’s not that often an artist that great comes along,” he explains. “I cried when she died, the same as when Otis died.
“It was a great loss; I’d love to have seen where she’d gone with it.”
As you may have seen, this week’s NME features the 2013 edition of their 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time. For this one, they also accepted votes from a bunch of the mag’s alumni, including me, so I thought it’d be an easy, albeit self-indulgent, blog to reproduce my Top 50 albums here.
Conspicuously wealthy blues collectors probably know about this by now, but a copy of Tommy Johnson’s “Alcohol And Jake Blues” has surfaced – only the second that’s ever been found – and is on sale at Ebay. It’ll be interesting to see how bidding shapes up before the auction closes around 10 tonight (UK time): at time of writing, the highest offer is $16,800.00.
In the next edition of Uncut, out on September 25 in the UK, Alastair McKay recounts a recent trip to Mike Scott’s flat in Dublin. McKay is there to interview Scott for a piece on the making of The Waterboys’ “Fisherman’s Blues”, a wonderful album which, imminently, will be memorialised by a 7CD compilation of its epic sessions, “Fisherman’s Box”.
