His closest collaborator during this period, Emmylou Harris, has her own amazing tales to tell, so it seemed time to bring out this archive feature, originally in Uncut’s August 2007 issue, where Harris takes us through the making of her greatest records. After all the hoo-ha, huff, hysteria and hot air, here, finally, are The Rolling Stones doing what they do even better than raising the collective temperature with impertinent ticket prices, something they seem to have been doing at least since their 1969 American tour, nothing new in the Stones being accused of commercial banditry and the cynical exploitation of their fans, on whose behalf so many complaints have been indignantly voiced since the 50 And Counting dates in London and New York were announced. Why don’t they celebrate their half-centenary with, say, a free concert, the cry went up in some quarters, and let more people have a chance to see them, and for nothing too? Well, when they tried that in 1969, look where it got them: Altamont.
As the first song of Jessica Pratt’s first album begins, you could be forgiven for believing it was a private press folk album from the early ‘70s. The work of a lost canyon comrade of Linda Perhacs, perhaps, or the implausibly lovely efforts of a “Blue” disciple from some one-horse town in the mid-west.
Chan Marshall’s new album, Sun, is reviewed in the latest issue of Uncut (Take 185, October 2012) – this week’s archive feature, from December 2006 (Take 115), finds Marshall recovering from a breakdown after perhaps her most successful year to date. Outkast's Big Boi has revealed that he has been talking to singer Kate Bush and has hinted that they may be planning a collaboration.
The rapper tweeted last night (August 15) that he had been in contact with the singer, writing: "Just got off the phone with Kate Bush!" When fans then pressed him to ask if the pair were collaboration, the rapper said: "Stay tuned..... ooooowwww!"
