Though Ween spent over a decade growing into one of America's biggest cult bands, renowned for a live show of bad taste and dizzying chaos, this is a curiously tame, professional fair. Brothers Dean and Gene blow through a lengthy 26-song set with flawless musicianship, but with the passion of a band who know they are knocking on and that the juvenile japes are wearing thin. One for Ween devotees.
So it's a musical, it won many Oscars, and it's got Catherine Zeta-Jones in it. But that doesn't mean it sucks! Anything that's influenced by Bob Fosse is bound to have a dark undercurrent, and this crowd-pleasing tale of man-murdering molls and the common craving for publicity is witty and slick. Renée Zellweger, Richard Gere and that Jones woman sing and hoof.
Not a genre Uncut features heavily, but the previous volume was one of the biggest-selling soundtrack-related CDs of recent years. It's an excuse to bung together top hits from everything from Grease to Charlie's Angels, but the real reason it's here is because by a fluke it includes, among 40 tracks, a run of about 10 which would make my Desert Island Discs—or 31 Songs, as we're now calling the concept.
Sometimes you just have to hand it to the mainstream. Chicago is a riot as a big glossy movie (although I can't vouch for the West End production starring some bloke from Eastenders). Kander and Ebb's songs are a sassy splash of satire, much more scathing and cynical than you might've inferred. Queen Latifah edges in among the Tinseltown divas, and numbers like "Razzle Dazzle" and "We Both Reached For The Gun" rasp with wit and pizzazz.
