What better way to kick off the final night of Club Uncut at The Great Escape than with a Brooklyn bar band – or indeed, a bar solo artist, the wily R'n'B raconteur Hans Chew.
May comes round again, and with it another Great Escape, one of the year's most satisfying festivals – not only because of its setting in Brighton's many beautiful venues, but because we at Uncut are again putting on our own three nights of some of the most interesting new bands around.
Radiohead's Thom Yorke and producer Nigel Godrich debuted new songs from their Atoms For Peace supergroup during their DJ set at an LA club on Friday [April 27].
The duo, who play in the band alongside Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea, Joey Waronker and Mauro Refosco, played the new songs during their set at Transmission LA: AV Club, a free 17-day music and visual arts festival series at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, curated by the Beastie Boys’ Mike D.
The Hacienda, the Manchester nightclub co-owned by New Order, has announced that it will be hosting three one-off events to celebrate the club's 30th anniversary.
The events, which are named X1, X2 and X3, will take place in late May and early June. The first will take place in the car park of the Hacienda, which is now a block of apartments. The other events will happen in the city's Sankeys nightclub.
“I’m tired,” Josh T. Pearson says. “It’s been a long life. I don’t even know what day of the week it is...” Someone in the crowd tells him the day and the date. “Friday the 13th?” he wryly muses, as if his life has been full of nothing but such days of potential reckoning in the ten long years since his band Lift To Experience released their fearsome album, The Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads, and soon after blew apart. That record imagined humanity making its last stand in Texas during the apocalypse. Pearson’s eventual follow-up Last Of The Country Gentlemen considers a recent relationship in similar terms. There’s the rare sense tonight of every bitter, funny, helpless word mattering, because they’re being pulled up from a harrowing place and being relived on stage.
Hiss Golden Messenger

“I’ll do my best to put you in a trance here,” says Michael Taylor, aka Hiss Golden Messenger, as he tweaks and tunes his guitar at the start of tonight’s Club Uncut show. This is Taylor’s third London show in a week, including an in-store performance at Rough Trade on Saturday. Clearly, he’s on a roll.
