Iggy Pop has spoken out about shunning major labels and releasing his latest album, Apres, online.

Launching the record in Paris on Wednesday night [May 9], Iggy Pop – real name James Osterberg – explained why he released the record direct to fans rather than putting it out via a major label. Speaking about labels, he said: “What has a record company ever done for me but humiliate and torment and drag me down?”

The Telegraph reports that he added that a major label “would have preferred that I do a rock album with popular punks, sort of like ‘Hi Dad!’ I was not going to do that!” He said that he offered the album to his label Virgin EMI and “They didn’t want it. They didn’t think they would make any money, they didn’t think my fans would like it – very sensible attitudes for a sensible sort of person – but that’s a different sort of person than I am.”

The album is Pop’s second French influenced album, following 2009’s Preliminaires.

Apres is out now and contains 10 tracks in all. Among them are covers of Frank Sinatra‘s “Only The Lonely”, The Beatles’ “Michelle”, Edith Piaf’s “La Vie En Rose”, Serge Gainsbourg’s “La Javanaise” and Yoko Ono’s “I’m Going Away Smiling”.

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry has confirmed that the band’s new album is almost finished.

In an interview with Rolling Stone he says the band are working on mixing the new tracks this week:

“It’s really close. We’ve started to mix. We’ve mixed a couple of the songs already, but I guess this week we’re really kind of rolling into mix mode. We have a couple of tracks left to finish up, just to put some overdubs on, but we’re kind of going from the final, final recording tracks to mixing this week.”

He also confirmed that the band will release a new single “in three or four weeks”. It will be the first release from their 15th studio album – the follow-up to 2004’s Honkin’ On Bobo – which will be produced by Jack Douglas, the man behind 1975’s Toys In The Attic.

Speaking of the new material, Perry said: “The record’s gonna sound modern and hi-fi. We’re not sitting around going, “We’re gonna do Night In The Ruts again or Rocks again”. We want to make a modern sounding record, but the main thing is the energy that the early records had.”

The band’s singer Steven Tyler has previously said that they are hoping to release their new record in July. One track, “Legendary Child”, which is likely to feature on the record, will also appear on the G.I. Joe: Retaliation film soundtrack.

Billy Bragg & Wilco – Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions

0

Uncle Barking! Essex Bard and Jeff Tweedy salute Woody Guthrie... When Nora Guthrie met Billy Bragg at a concert to mark her father’s 80th birthday, Woody Guthrie’s reputation was fixed. He was a patron saint of the 1960s folk revival; the dustbowl balladeer who mentored Dylan and inspired the pre-Clash Joe Strummer (aka Woody). He was an icon, to be revered and occasionally dusted down. At that concert, where the memory of Woody was serenaded by Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger, Nora put a proposition to Bragg. In her father’s archive, she had discovered lyrics, but not music, for 3000 songs. They were written from the 1940s’ onwards, when Guthrie was living in a house at 3520 Mermaid Avenue, in Coney Island. In the lyrics, Nora discovered a side to her father that was quite different to the image of the dustbowl balladeer. The songs were sophisticated and urban. Yes, there were numbers about religion, fascism and injustice. But Guthrie was also writing about flying saucers and (with the hard rock of his lust barely contained by a volcano metaphor) Ingrid Bergman. Nora invited Bragg to put tunes to the words. (Woody, when hospitalised, had made the same invitation to Dylan, but Bob was reportedly scared away by Arlo Guthrie’s babysitter). Bragg, in turn, engaged Wilco, having been impressed by the band’s adaptability on Being There. And, in the manner of the Basement Tapes, but with the whole of rock history to play with, they jammed (like Chuck Berry! Like Metallica! Like Tom Waits!) until the music matched the words. The project was a success, producing two Grammy-nominated albums, and introducing Guthrie to a new audience. Musically, it offered treats for fans of both Bragg and Wilco. “California Stars” could grace any Wilco album, and “Way Over Yonder In The Minor Key” is the essence of Bragg. Still, as Bragg limbers up to celebrate Guthrie’s 100th birthday, it’s a surprise to discover that a further 17 tracks were recorded, although a couple have escaped from the vault in the last few years. The beautiful “When The Roses Bloom Again” was presumably recorded in error, as Guthrie didn’t write it (Will D Cobb is credited), but it’s a gorgeous song (also covered by Laura Cantrell). And the financial crisis flushed out “The Jolly Banker”, a Tweedy-sung folk tune which could have been composed for the Occupy movement. Listening to volume three, it’s clear that many of these songs were probably held back because they conformed to preconceived opinions about Guthrie. That doesn’t make them any less good. The highlight is “Listening To The Wind That Blows”, which plays like one of those great broken-hearted Wilco ballads, while placing Guthrie on the shore looking over to “this great and crowded city, where the silver dollar flows”. Fans of Uncle Tupelo will also appreciate the bustling pro-union folk of “Chain Of Broken Hearts”. And it’s interesting to hear Bragg stretching himself, spitting bile like Elvis Costello on “Give Me A Nail”, or crooning against droning pipes on “Go Down To The Water”. Bragg contends that Mermaid Avenue refashioned Guthrie’s reputation, establishing him as the first alternative songwriter. Certainly, it underlines his rebel spirit. It also displays the durability of his lyrics. These songs, rehydrated after 50 years, sound bright and timeless. For Bragg, the project had obvious benefits. He is now firmly established as the torch carrier for Guthrie’s radical, playful spirit. For Wilco, Mermaid Avenue represents a high point in the relationship between the late Jay Bennett and Jeff Tweedy. Bragg suggests these albums contain some of Bennett’s finest work. Certainly, it’s hard to argue with the way his organ brings a note of mournful solemnity to the epic “Remember The Mountain Bed”. It sounds like a hymn, a poem, a serenade. And like nothing you’d expect from Woody Guthrie. EXTRAS: 7/10 Albums are available for individual download. Box includes documentary Man On The Sand, and booklet with introduction by Nora Guthrie. Alastair McKay Q&A Billy Bragg What was the original idea? Nora (Guthrie) wanted to do was to make Woody into a three-dimensional character. Her concern was that he’d become an icon, almost like you couldn’t get to the real man. She felt the lyrics in the archive said more about Woody than “This Land Is Your Land”. So you were writing a biography through his songs? We were connecting with him. Very few of the songs we chose were written in the 1930s. They were almost all written in the 1940s. That means they were written in New York. It’s an urban Woody Guthrie. He’s not the guy riding the railroads. What was the original idea?

Nora (Guthrie) wanted to do was to make Woody into a three-dimensional character. Her concern was that he’d become an icon, almost like you couldn’t get to the real man. She felt the lyrics in the archive said more about Woody than “This Land Is Your Land”.

Black Sabbath have announced that they will be releasing a new ‘Best Of’ album next month.

The compilation, which is titled Iron Man: The Best Of Black Sabbath, will be released on June 4 and contains a total of 14 tracks.

The album contains a selection of tracks from across the metal legends’ back catalogue, including “Iron Man”, “War Pigs”, “Changes”, “Paranoid” and “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath”.

Black Sabbath will headline this summer’s Download Festival along with The Prodigy and Metallica over the weekend of June 8-10, and last week announced that they will play a small show at Birmingham’s O2 Academy on May 19 to warm up for the festival.

The band are currently recording a brand new album and will tour the world throughout the rest of the year, although guitarist Tony Iommi, who is currently undergoing treatment for lymphoma, will not take part in a large chunk of the band’s summer tour dates.

The shows will see frontman Ozzy Osbourne joined by special guests including former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash, Geezer Butler and Zakk Wylde. Iommi will, however, play at Download and at the Birmingham gig.

Although Iommi will play, there is still no word on whether the band’s estranged drummer Bill Ward will be part of the line-up for the show. The drummer had previously revealed he was unhappy with the contract for the band’s new album and world tour and claimed he would not take part in the new album sessions and shows if a ‘fair agreement’ was not met.

As a result of this, the remaining members of the band vowed to carry on without him. They have yet, however, to announce a replacement for Ward.

The tracklisting for Iron Man: The Best Of Black Sabbath is as follows:

‘Paranoid’

‘Iron Man’

‘Changes’

‘Fairies Wear Boots’

‘War Pigs’

‘Never Say Die’

‘Children Of The Grave’

‘The Wizard’

‘Snowblind’

‘Sweet Leaf’

‘Evil Woman (Don’t Play Your Games)’

‘Sabbath Bloody Sabbath’

Sinead O’Connor has explained the reasons why she cancelled all her planned tour dates for 2012 after citing health reasons.

The singer posted a lengthy message on her fan website describing her ongoing battle with bipolar disorder and the split with her manager, Fachtna O’Ceallaigh.

She writes that instead of receiving treatment for her bipolar disorder, her condition was misunderstood by her management. “I was treated as if it was my own fault I wasn’t managing and I was responsible for it,” she said. “Expectations of me were unreasonable in my opinion and even at times inhumane.”

“It is of course accurate to state Fachtna is the best music BUSINESS manager alive,” she writes. “However being a manager involves more than setting up the business end of things in the fantastic way he absolutely did. ??It involves caring for your client on a personal level and being above all the best friend your client has in the lonely and exploitative world of showbusiness??.”

She added:

“While it is accurate to state that the business end of matters was set up most excellently, it is also accurate to state that my widely documented and extreme illness of the last nine months, which involved a suicide attempt on January 10, 2012, was not taken into consideration at any stage during recent scheduling of my promo tours or concert tours concerning my most recent album.”

When announcing the cancellation of her tour last month (April 24) she said that she had suffered a “very serious breakdown” between December 2011 and March of this year and would not be touring for the rest of 2012. She was advised by her doctors not to tour in support of her new album, How About I Be Me (And You Be You)?, but went ahead anyway, a decision she now regrets.

O’Connor has endured a difficult year, admitting in January that she took an overdose days before issuing her cry for help on Twitter.

How About I Be Me (And You Be You)? was released in February and is the ninth studio album of O’Connor’s career.

Bjork has pulled her headline appearances at the Primavera festivals in Barcelona in Spain and Porto in Portugal next month because of an inflamed nodule in her throat.

The Icelandic singer was set to appear at the events in Barcelona on June 2 and in Porto on June 9, but has now cancelled the shows. Last month she cancelled two shows upon discovering the nodule. She had been playing her eighth studio album ‘Biophilia’ in residence at the Buenos Aires Centro de Exposiciones in Argentina but shelved the final shows of the run after the diagnosis.

Primavera has released a statement about the cancellations, saying they had to deliver the news with a ‘heavy heart’. They wrote: After canceling some shows due to an inflamed nodule, Bjork’s specialist doctor advised her to keep resting and not to continue with the shows as they could bring a permanent damage to her voice. We are very sorry about any inconvenience this might bring, and appreciate your understanding. We wish Bjork a quick and full recovery to continue enjoying her talent soon.’

The singer is still scheduled to play a number of other high profile festivals shows this summer, with slots at Open’er and Øya festivals still booked. Primavera have offered to refund day tickets for the days Bjork was supposed to play, if they were bought before May 10.

Country music legend Willie Nelson has turned down Roseanne Barr’s offer to be her Presidential running mate. Earlier this year, Barr – who found fame with her 1990's sitcom Roseanne – filed the official documents needed to become the Green Party's nominee for President. Nelson responded to Barr yesterday (May 8), via Twitter.com/willienelson, writing: "Thank you but no thank you. Good luck to you!" to which Barr replied: "Is this an actual response? I sure appreciate it! Good luck to you too, Willie!" Willie Nelson's new album, 'Heroes' is released next week, on May 14. Aretha Franklin is set to be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame later this year.

The soul singer is one of six acts to receive the honour this year and will join the ranks of previously inducted Hall of Famers Dolly Parton and Elvis at a ceremony on August 14 in Hendersonville, Tennessee, reports AP via the NY Daily News.

Franklin’s 1972 record “Amazing Grace” is one of the best-selling gospel albums ever made, selling over two million copies worldwide. This summer Ricky Skaggs, the Hoppers, Dallas Holm, Rex Humbard and Love Song will also join the other 150 artists already in the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

At the start of the year, Aretha Franklin called off her engagement to long-term friend William ‘Willie’ Wilkerson. The legend, who had been married twice before, announced their plans to tie the knot over the summer, but then said that she realised things were “moving a little too fast”.

Franklin released her latest album A Woman Falling Out Of Love last year, her first studio LP since 2003’s So Damn Happy. She recently returned to performing after recovering from a serious illness that saw her lose over six stone in weight.

Alabama Shakes have given their views on where new bands are going wrong in their approach to songwriting.

Speaking in this week’s issue of NME, which is on UK newsstands and available digitally now, the band’s singer Brittany Howard has said that she and her bandmates have focused on sincerity, rather than trying to be “original” or “different”.

Asked about her views on songwriting, Howard said: “A lot of people are like, ‘I want to be different, I want to be original, I want to be an electronic band that mixes this and this’, instead of just writing songs together as people and being sincere about it.”

Howard also spoke about her disbelief at the band’s success, adding: “I don’t really know what’s going on. I don’t know if it has sunk in yet. My greatest pride is to have the album out. It’s completely remarkable because this all started in an extra bedroom in my house.”

Beastie Boys were hit with a lawsuit over alleged undeclared samples the day before Adam Yauch passed away, it has been revealed.

Yauch, who was also known as MCA, was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 and succumbed to the disease on Friday [May 4], aged 47.

US record label Tuf America had submitted a lawsuit against the band the day before (May 3) which alleges that they illegally sampled 1980s outfit Trouble Funk’s “Say What” and “Drop The Bomb” on four of their early tunes.

The suit alleges that “Shadrach” and “Car Thief” from the Beasties’ second album Paul’s Boutique and the tracks “Hold It, Now Hit It” and “The New Style” from their debut record Licensed To Ill. Tuf are seeking substantial damages.

Tuf America‘s attorney Kelly Talcott has released a statement after the lawsuit had been roundly criticised for coming so soon after the announcement of Yauch’s death.

She told E! News: “I was very sorry to hear of Adam Yauch’s untimely passing, and can assure you that the unfortunate timing of the filing of Tuf America’s complaint had nothing to do with his health. On behalf of myself and Tuf America, I offer our condolences to Adam’s family, friends and fans.”

Franz Ferdinand‘s Alex Kapranos dubbed Oasis as “boring” in an impromptu question and answer session with fans on Twitter last night [May 8].

When asked what tips he would give to new bands, his advice was to steer clear of Oasis covers:

“Never cover Oasis. Never forget your friends. Always have a laugh.”

Queried further on why bands shouldn’t cover Oasis, Kapranos replied: “Ach. Nothing personal. Just because everyone does. And they’re so fucking boring.”

In a candid stream of tweets, which ranged from his opinion on football fans, to his favourite guitar, fish and chip shop and species of dinosaur, he told one user: “Yes, I know. I’m just being confrontational for the sake of it and why the fuck not?”. When asked by another user if he was bored in a hotel room, he added: “And drunk. Heady combo.”

Franz Ferdinand are currently working on material for their fourth studio album, the follow up to 2009’s Tonight: Franz Ferdinand. They are set debut some of the new material at an intimate set of shows in Ireland this month beginning on May 18 at Galway’s Roisin Dubh, before moving onto Limerick’s Dolan’s venue (19) and finally Cork Pavilion (20).

Jack White has revealed he has an ambition to play the first ever vinyl record in outer space.

The former White Stripes man was speaking to astronaut Buzz Aldrin in a feature for Interview Magazine and told Aldrin, who was the second ever man to walk on the moon, that he is working on a “secret project” to get one of the songs on his Third Man Records label to be the “first vinyl record played in outer space”.

Asked how he planned to do it, White said he was planning “to launch a balloon that carries a vinyl record player. And figure out a way to drop the needle with all that turbulence up there and ensure that it will still play”.

White also spoke with Aldrin about the break-up of The White Stripes and admitted that he couldn’t have recorded his debut solo album, Blunderbuss, while his old band still existed.

He said of this: “I didn’t want to go out and make solo records if The White Stripes still existed. I thought that people would be too confused by the two ideas and a lot of people wouldn’t be able to get their head around it. So, in a sense, it was something that was bound to happen one day. But I’m sad about it all the time.”

White has recently hinted that there will be a swift follow up to Blunderbuss, saying: “We had enough for an album at one point, but I just kept going… I’ve got another 12 songs that I haven’t finished yet.”

Jack White returns to the UK next month for a series of live shows.

Paul Simon has scooped this year’s Polar Music Prize.

The award is given yearly to both a pop and classical artist. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma has won the classical portion of the prize. Both artists will be given their prizes of one million kronor (£91,000) at the ceremony in Stockholm on August 28, reports BBC News.

Patti Smith and Kronos Quartet won the prize last year, and other previous Polar Prize winners include Elton John, Paul McCartney, Bjork and Bob Dylan. The award was founded in 1989 by Stig Anderson, former manager of ABBA.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Music said the Graceland artist won this year because of his “consummate skill, innovative arrangements and provocative lyrics. Nobody else is more deserving of the epithet of ‘world-class songwriter'”.

They added: “For five decades, Paul Simon has built bridges not only over troubled waters but over entire oceans by (re)joining the world’s continents with his music. Paul Simon has compiled a library of songs which will remain open to future generations.”

Paul Simon will play Graceland in its entirety at this year’s Hard Rock Calling in Hyde Park on July 15.
