Green Man — Joanna Newsom, Vashti Bunyan and Robert Plant

Green Man. It’s all sylvan meadows, scampering deer, Hobits dancing in secluded woodland glades. Oh, OK, like all festivals this summer it’s a big sheet of grey mud and a big sheet of grey sky. But Green Man is different.

Edinburgh Film Festival — blog the first

Greetings from gusty Edinburgh, where this year's Film Festival is kicking into its first full day, and there's a few hangovers from last night's Opening Gala party.

Edinburgh Film Festival — the pre-blog!

Tomorrow, I'm off to the Edinburgh Film Festival. I've got loads of fond memories of previous years -- many of them, I have to admit, caught up in Scotland's marvellous, forward-thinking policy towards pub opening times -- but this year's festival promises a bundle of fine films.

Linda Thompson’s Versatile Heart

I guess there are a few recurring subjects on Wild Mercury Sound, little hives of activity that I seem to keep visiting again and again. Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace label is one, and I need to tell you about the mighty new Magik Markers LP sometime soon. But the extended, diverse and interwoven Thompson and Wainwright folk dynasties is definitely another.

Human League, and the mass herding towards the Arctic Monkeys

Very quick blog, must head out to the Arctic Monkeys, who have just gone on the mainstage, incredibly loudly. Having just come over from seeing The Human League, what a difference! Whilst the League were playing 'Human', the tent just literally started emptying - a quick check of the clock, the Arctic effect has just taken place once again. The whole of Benicassim, literally, is herding towards the mainstage towards Alex Turner and the boys who are tonight's headliners. The site is deserted from the far end down. This is going to be immense. Eep.
