Rescue Dawn

DIR: WERNER HERZOG ST: CHRISTIAN BALE, STEVE ZAHN, JEREMY DAVIES ~ Poor old Christian Bale. Invariably pumped up or emaciated in his roles, he's surely tormented his body enough to deserve a role as a restaurant critic one of these days. He suffers again in Rescue Dawn, an unlikely jungle escape drama by German maestro Werner Herzog. In recent years, with Grizzly Man, The Wild Blue Yonder and others, Herzog has reasserted his claim to be a documentary maker of genius, but in his first fiction film since 2001's lamentable Invincible, he returns to the theme of his 1997 documentary Little Dieter Needs To Fly. Here he fictionalises the true story of US fighter pilot Dieter Dengler (Bale), shot down during the Vietnam war. He's interned in harsh jungle conditions with two other Americans (Steve Zahn and Jeremy Davies), both brain-fried by long captivity. Bale's mixture of desperation and boy-scout determination carry the day against brutal odds, but in a trio of mad-eyed face-offs, it's the underrated Zahn who steals the show. Immensely watchable, gripping and thematically of a piece with vintage Herzog dramas such as Aguirrre Wrath of God, this is nevertheless his most mainstream film, and its gung-ho ending falls horribly flat. One suspects all concerned had an utterly miserable time making it - which will no doubt have suited the self-punishing Bale just fine. JONATHAN ROMNEY

The Reformation Game!

We never thought we'd see the day some of our life-changing, music-changing bands would ever get back in the same room as each other, let alone start actually making and performing music agian. So lo, and behold, 2007 has been a bit of hectic year for musicians putting aside their historical grudges (and possibly running out of money) and being part of the Reformation Game! This year, we've seen LED ZEPPELIN, THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN, THE VERVE, and RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE return to active service. And yesterday, MY BLOODY VALENTINE announced their first live dates in 16 years. So, it got us thinking: who else would we like to see reform..? Obviously, PINK FLOYD, THE SMITHS and THE STONE ROSES would figure pretty highly at the top of anyone lists. But beyond them, what other bands who've meant a lot to you over the years and are now sadly no more would you like to see get back together..? A quick office poll has seen suggestions ranging from SPACEMEN 3 to ATARI TEENAGE RIOT, BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD, N.W.A and PULP. Now it's over to you... Who do you want to scramble for tickets for!? Tell us here!

A pair of tickets for Led Zeppelin's reunion concert has been sold today for £83,000. The tickets were for sale as part of a charity auction for BBC's annual Children In Need appeal, and Radio 2 listener Kenneth Donnell in Glasgow nabbed the tickets. Donnell won the auction for the tickets that were originally worth £125 and only available through a ballot style lottery. Though for his cash, he will also get the added treat of seeing Led Zeppelin rehearse prior to their headline show at London's 02 Arena on December 10. Led Zeppelin are reuniting for a one-off show as part of a concert in tribute to their former boss, Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. Pete Townshend, Bill Wyman, Paul Rodgers and Paolo Nutini will also perform at the show. The show was originally scheduled to take place on November 26, until guitarist Jimmy Page accidentally broke his finger delaying the show by two weeks. Other winners in Radio 2's Auction of Things That Money Can't Buy included Sir Tom Hunter, who paid £100,000 for two VIP passes to the 2008 Formula 1 Santander British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Children in Need's fundraising TV show takes place on BBC 1 from 7pm tomorrow (Friday 16).
