Best experienced live, the Abbey Road session captures the undergroundโ€™s favourite anarcho-Brum scruffs extemporising in front of an invited audience on the likes of perennial festival shout-athon โ€œOut Demons Outโ€. By the time of 1972โ€™s Inside Out, theyโ€™d dropped the Beefheart mannerisms and eased off on the agit-prop in favour of stoner country-rock. The following yearโ€™s Oora even has David Bedford arrangements and soulful backing vocals from Madeline Bell. Never really having the chops for the more sophisticated stuff, they should have stuck with being the English MC5.
