Weird serendipities aplenty this week: versions of "O, Death" on two albums I downloaded one after another, by Mike & Cara Gangloff and Bessie Jones; dovetailing into Sea Island overlap between Jones and Loscil. It makes for a nice blurring between time and genre with, say, the Gangloffs using esoteric strategies to achieve a similar kind of transcendence that Jones and the Georgia Sea Island Singers reach through more orthodox, albeit uncommonly raw, Gospel routes in these Lomax recordings from the early '60s.

PJ Harvey receives honorary degree from Goldsmiths University

PJ Harvey has received an honorary degree from Goldsmiths University. The singer, who was appointed an MBE last year, accepted the accolade from the London institution earlier today (September 10), alongside human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell and journalist Neal Ascherson.

PJ Harvey to receive honorary degree

PJ Harvey has been announced as one of the names to receive an honorary degree from Goldsmiths University this year. The singer, who was appointed an MBE last year, will accept the accolade from the London university next month, along with architect Dame Zaha Hadid, human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, journalist Neal Ascherson and poet George Szirtes. The ceremonies will take place between September 8 and 11. PJ Harvey will be awarded on Wednesday, September 10.

Watch Beck’s new video for “Heart Is A Drum”

Beck has unveiled a video for his track "Heart Is A Drum". The track features on the singer's 2013 album Morning Phase . For the video, Beck worked with British music video director Sophie Muller, who is best known for her collaborations with Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Blur, Garbage and a host of others.
