One of the highlights of Dave Alvin’s last solo album, 2011’s Eleven Eleven, was a track called “What’s Up With Your Brother?”, a droll blues about Dave’s famously fractious relationship with his brother, Phil, that ended hilariously with them having the kind of argument that put paid to The Blasters, the band they were in together before fraternal tensions drove them into a ditch. They split in 1985, after just five albums. While Dave became dedicated to life as a hard travelling road dog, Phil completed a master’s degree in mathematics and artificial intelligence.

Scripted and directed by 12 Years A Slave screenwriter John Ridley, Jimi: All Is By My Side tells the story of Jimi Hendrix's life throughout 1966 and 1967, a period in which he moved to London, formed the Experience and played a career-making set at California's Monterey Pop Festival, which is where the film ends.

What was originally meant to be a brisk 10 minute chat about working with the Coens and the film's soundtrack evolved into a much longer conversation, the bulk of which, inevitably, I couldn't work into the feature. The first picture of Andre 3000 as Jimi Hendrix in the forthcoming biopic has been released.
The picture is taken from the website for the Toronto International Film Festival, where the biopic - titled All Is By My Side - will receive its world premiere in September. The festival has also released a new synopsis for the biopic.
